The county descriptions above are intended to provide a simple indication of the geographical areas covered by each phase. Environment Agency drought areas do not align precisely with county boundaries. Applicants will therefore be required to provide the location of their principal farming business and geographical eligibility will be verified against the official drought area applicable at the time of the relevant grant phase.

We will review the Environment Agency’s official drought classifications before each phase opens so that any newly designated drought areas can be included. Areas experiencing prolonged dry weather that have not been formally designated as being in drought are not currently eligible.

About the Emergency Drought Grant

The Emergency Drought Grant has been developed in response to exceptional drought and prolonged dry weather conditions affecting farming businesses across England and Wales.

Livestock enterprises are experiencing reduced grazing, early use of winter forage, increased feed costs and additional expenditure associated with transporting water to livestock. Cropping businesses are facing earlier harvests, reduced yields, lower crop quality and restricted access to irrigation.

These additional costs and reduced farm incomes are placing significant pressure on farming households, with personal and household income in some cases being diverted to meet essential drought-related farming costs. This can leave less money available for everyday household expenditure.

The grant is designed to provide rapid financial support towards personal and household expenditure where drought-related pressures have contributed to periods of significant financial pressure.

Who can apply?

Applicants must meet all grant eligibility criteria.

1

Farm owner or tenant farmer

You must be actively operating a farming business.

2

Located in a drought area

Your principal farming business must be within an area officially designated as being in drought when your regional phase opens.

3

Significant financial pressure linked to drought

You must be experiencing significant personal or household financial pressure as a result of the impact of current drought conditions on your farming business, resulting in difficulty meeting personal or household living costs.

  • Provide information within the application about the impact the drought is having on your farming business.
  • Provide evidence of your connection to the farming business through recent farm business accounts (dated within the last two years) or a farm business bank statement (from the last month). The applicant must be named on the document provided.
  • Complete the required declarations confirming that the information provided is accurate.
  • Understand that the £2,000 grant is for personal and household living costs only and cannot be used for farm, business or other trading expenses.
One grant in respect of each farm business. A maximum of one £2,000 grant can be made in respect of each eligible farming business. The grant is paid to support the applicant’s personal and household living costs and is not a grant towards the farming business or its business costs. Where a farming business is operated as a partnership, family business or limited company, only one application may be made in respect of that business.

When is the application form open?

Applications open at 12.00 midday on the Monday of each regional grant phase.

What will I need to apply?

You will need to provide evidence confirming the existence and operation of your farming business.

Have one of these ready before you begin

  • Recent farm business accounts (dated within the last 2 years); or
  • a farm business bank statement (from the last month).

Your name must be clearly shown on the document you provide.

You will also be asked to provide information about how the drought has affected your farming business and contributed to your current financial pressure. RABI may request further information or supporting evidence where this is required to determine eligibility.

Before you apply: OneID verification
As part of the application process, you may be asked to complete verification through OneID. If you are waiting for a OneID verification code, please do not repeatedly refresh the page or request multiple verification codes, as this may temporarily prevent you from continuing with your application. Please allow time for your verification code to arrive before trying again. If you experience difficulties, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444.

How can the £2,000 grants help?

The £2,000 grants are not intended to compensate a farming business for the overall financial loss caused by drought, which may be considerably greater.

Drought-related costs and reduced farm income can put pressure on household finances, particularly where personal or household income has been diverted to meet essential farming costs.

The grants are intended to provide immediate, financial support towards personal and household expenditure, helping to ease the financial pressure on the farming household.

Frequently asked questions

These FAQs provide more information about the grant and application process.

Q1: Who is eligible for the Emergency Drought Grant?

The grant is available to farm owners and tenant farmers who are actively operating a farming business and whose principal farming business is located within an area officially designated as being in drought.

Applicants must meet all grant eligibility criteria and provide the required supporting information and evidence.

Q2: How much is the grant?

The Emergency Drought Grant provides fixed £2,000 grants.

It is a personal support grant for the applicant and their household. It can be used towards personal and household living expenses.

It cannot be used to pay farm or business expenses.

Q3: Is the grant available to farm workers?

No. This grant is specifically targeted at farm owners and tenant farmers who are actively operating a farming business within an area officially designated as being in drought.

Farm workers who need support can contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444 to discuss what other support may be available.

Q4: Is the grant available to retired or non-working farmers?

No. Applicants must currently be actively operating an eligible farming business.

Retired or non-working farmers who need support can contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444 to discuss what other support may be available.

Q5: Why am I being asked to provide farm business accounts or a farm business bank statement if the grant cannot be used for business costs?

The farm business accounts or bank statement are required to confirm your eligibility for the grant, not to determine how the grant will be spent.

The Emergency Drought Grant is specifically for farm owners and tenant farmers who are actively operating a farming business in an eligible drought area. The documents help RABI confirm that you are connected to and actively operating the farming business you are applying in respect of.

Q6: How do I know if my farm is in an eligible drought area?

The Emergency Drought Grant is only available to farming businesses located within areas officially designated as being in drought.

The Emergency Drought Grant will open in regional waves and information about the geographical areas included within each wave will be available on RABI’s website.

Eligibility is based on the location of your principal farming business rather than your home address.

Q7: My county is included in a regional wave. Does that automatically mean my farm is eligible?

Not necessarily. The county information provided by RABI gives a broad description of the areas covered by each regional wave.

Official drought boundaries do not always follow county boundaries. RABI will therefore verify that the principal farming business is located within an area officially designated as being in drought.

If you need support but are not eligible for this grant please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444. A member of the team can discuss your circumstances and the wider support that may be available to you.

Q8: My area is experiencing very dry conditions but has not officially been declared in drought. Can I apply?

No. The Emergency Drought Grant is specifically targeted at farming businesses located within areas officially designated as being in drought.

Areas experiencing prolonged dry weather but which have not been formally designated as being in drought are not eligible for this grant.

Q9: My home address is outside the drought area but my farm is within it. Can I apply?

Yes, subject to meeting all other grant eligibility criteria. Geographical eligibility is determined by the location of the principal farming business rather than the applicant’s home address.

Q10: What happens if my area is officially declared in drought after my regional wave has taken place?

RABI will review changes to official drought status throughout the grant period.

Where a new area is officially designated as being in drought during the grant period, RABI will consider whether and how that area can be accommodated within the remaining grant waves and available grant funding.

Q11: What does one grant per farm business mean?

Only one £2,000 grant can be awarded in respect of each eligible farming business.

Where a farming business is operated by more than one person, including a partnership or family farming business, only one application can be made on behalf of that business.

Multiple applications from different individuals relating to the same farming business will not result in additional grants.

The “one grant per farm business” rule is used to limit the number of applications that can be made in connection with the same farming business. It does not mean the grant is paid to or intended for the business. The £2,000 grant is for the successful applicant’s personal and household living expenses.

Q12: I farm at more than one location. Can I apply more than once?

The Emergency Drought Grant provides a maximum of one grant per farm business, rather than one grant per farm or holding.

If you operate more than one farm or holding as part of the same farming business, only one application can be made.

Q13: What evidence will I need to provide?

You will be required to provide evidence confirming your connection to the farming business you are applying on behalf of.

You will need to upload either recent farm business accounts or a farm business bank statement. Your name must be clearly shown on the document you provide.

If you are not named on either the farm business accounts or farm business bank statement provided, your application will not meet the grant eligibility requirements.

RABI may request further information or evidence where this is required to confirm eligibility.

Q14: How do I apply?

The quickest way to apply is through the dedicated application form on RABI’s website.

Applications will open at 12.00 midday on the opening date for your regional grant wave.

If you are unable to apply online, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444 and a member of the team will assist you with making an application.

Q15: What if I am unable to upload the required documents?

If you are unable to upload the required supporting documentation or are having difficulty completing the online application, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444 for assistance.

Q16: I am having difficulty providing my banking details. What should I do?

If your bank details are not accepted by OneID, or you are experiencing difficulty completing this part of the application, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444.

A member of the team can assist you with completing your application.

Q17: How do I know RABI has received my application?

Once your application has been successfully submitted, you will receive a confirmation email containing your Unique Identifying Number (UIN).

Please retain your UIN as you may need to quote this if you contact RABI about your application.

If you do not receive a confirmation email, please check your spam or junk folder. If you are still unable to locate it, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444.

Q18: What happens after I have submitted my application?

Once your application has been received, it will be assessed against the grant eligibility criteria and the supporting evidence provided.

RABI will contact you to advise whether your application has been successful. If your application does not meet the grant eligibility requirements, you will be advised that your application has been declined.

Q19: I haven’t heard from RABI and I am worried the grant will close before my application is processed. What should I do?

If you successfully submitted your application while your regional grant wave was open and received a Unique Identifying Number (UIN), your application will still be considered even if the grant wave closes before it has been processed.

You do not need to submit another application.

If you did not receive a UIN following submission, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444.

Q20: What happens if the funding for my regional wave is fully allocated before the advertised closing date?

Each regional grant wave has a maximum allocation of £400,000, providing funding for up to 200 eligible farm businesses.

If the available funding for a regional wave is fully committed before the advertised closing date, the wave may close early and no further applications will be accepted.

Q21: Can I apply during another region’s grant wave if I miss the wave for my area?

No. Applications must be made during the regional grant wave covering the location of your principal farming business.

If you miss the relevant application window and need support, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444 to discuss what other support may be available.

Q22: The application window for my region has closed. Can I still apply?

Once the application window for your regional grant wave has closed, no further applications to that wave can be accepted.

If you were able to submit your application and received a UIN before the grant wave closed, your application will still be assessed.

If you missed the opportunity to apply and need support, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444.

Q23: What happens if I need help but I am not eligible for the Emergency Drought Grant or the grant has closed?

The Emergency Drought Grant is only one part of the support available from RABI.

If you need support but are not eligible for this grant, or the grant has closed, please contact RABI’s 24/7 Helpline on 0800 188 4444. A member of the team can discuss your circumstances and the wider support that may be available to you.
